The deadline for Spring 2006 membership is Friday, April 28 at 4:30pm! If you missed the deadline, you can still apply for Fall 2006 membership.
The Benefits
Why join? There are plenty of great reasons to join, some of which include:
- The documents –the membership certificates and card are evidence of lifetime membership
- The references provided throughout one’s lifetime (this service alone is worth the investment). Our chapter provides many opportunities to meet and interact with other peers and faculty who may have similar research and career interests.
- The experience gained by working with Psi Chi is excellent for building up a resume – both for graduate school and professional careers
- Psi Chi is a springboard for intellectual and professional growth. Opportunities are made available to members for promoting their research, receiving national and international recognition, meeting and interacting with leaders in their field, and meeting Psi Chi members of other chapters who also will be future leaders.
- As a member, you will receive the quarterly magazine, Eye on Psi Chi, which has articles on internships, awards and grants, psychology careers, and conferences in your area.
- The United States government recognizes membership in Psi Chi as meeting one of the requirements for entrance at the GS-7 level in the Federal service.
The Requirements
Now that you’ve heard all about Psi Chi, do you have what it takes to join? You need to:
- Be an undergraduate or graduate student who has declared a major or minor in Psychology (or a field similar in scope to psychology)
- Complete at least 14 units of psychology coursework at the time of application. Any combination of psychology coursework is acceptable (e.g., Psyc 1, Psyc 2, Psyc 178, Psyc 197)
- Have a cumulative overall GPA of 3.0 or greater
- Have an average GPA of 3.0 or greater in your psychology coursework
- Be a sophomore or upperclassman
Joining Psi Chi
Now that you’re convinced Psi Chi is right for you, how do join? It’s easy! Just follow these simple steps:
- Check to make sure that you’ve fulfilled the requirements for membership. A good place to start is to check GROWL under “Degree Check” for your student records on units completed and GPA information.
- Obtain an application at the Psi Chi bulletin board in the psychology Olmstead building on the first floor. If you can’t find an application, email an officer on the “Contact” page for more help.
- Fill out the application and both registration cards completely. Be sure to list both your social security number as well as student ID number.
- Include a check for $50 made out to “UC Regents” with your application materials in a sealed envelope. We cannot accept cash; however, money orders are acceptable.
- Place your sealed envelope in the Psi Chi mailbox in Sue Johnstone’s office in Olmstead 1344. The deadline for membership for Spring Quarter 2006 is Friday, April 28 at 4:30pm. No applications for fall will be processed after this date!
- Please wait 2-3 weeks after the application deadline for GPA verification. Once we’ve confirmed your membership, we will notify you via email about your membership status.
